Robert De Niro Comeback Trail Release Date Delayed To 2021

November 7, 2020

The Robert De Niro comedy The Comeback Trail has its release date pushed back to 2021. An all-star cast is set to join De Niro in his latest movie, including fellow screen legends Tommy Lee Jones and Morgan Freeman, along with Zach Braff, Emile Hirsch and Eddie Griffin. This time around, De Niro plays a shady 1970s movie producer hatching a scheme to deliberately kill his star (Jones) in order to score a huge insurance pay-out.

Unfortunately fans will have to wait to see De Niro, Jones and Freeman together on-screen as the release date for The Comeback Trail has been pushed back, as revealed by Cloudburst Entertainment. Originally set to come out in November 2020, the movie is now slated to hit screens some time in 2021. A Comeback Trail movie trailer arrived in October touting the original release date.

The Comeback Trail is of course only the latest Hollywood film to be delayed as the movie industry continues to grapple with the new realities imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. In some instances, studios have elected to forego theatrical releases entirely as theaters continue to deal with dwindling attendance or outright closure, preferring to put their movies on VOD and streaming. In other cases, as with Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, studios have gone ahead with releasing films in theaters only to see greatly diminished box office returns in domestic markets (overseas markets have tended to be healthier, as was the case for Tenet, which managed to gross $350 million overall).

The synopsis for The Comeback Trail reads: “Two movie producers who owe money to the mob set up their aging movie star for an insurance scam to try and save themselves. But they wind up getting more than they ever imagined.”
